Two Step, by Dave Matthews and 9/11

The memory of this date and the lyrics of the song Two Step go hand in hand for us with a story that is worth telling. The lyrics were recently used as a reading at one of our weddings and immediately brought us back to the weekend following Tuesday, September 11, 2001.  That weekend, like most weekends in September, were full of weddings and celebrations,  however the grief and terror that shook our nation that week changed the lives, plans and memories of our nation and of many bridal couples. Each wedding we celebrated that weekend struggled with the choice of “how can we celebrate with so much national sadness?” All flights were grounded and guests could not fly due to the restrictions. Guest lists were dramatically cut due to so many travel plans being uprooted.  Others made the personal choice to celebrate in the face of so much grief. However, though all this and through all these years, one weddings we celebrated on that somber weekend experienced the most profound and tragic loss and sacrifice of all. The bride was a buyer for TJMax. Since it was her wedding week, she did not get on that plane at Logan Airport to go to the conference in California with her co-workers, three of whom were the bridesmaids in her wedding party. Those three women were on the plane that hit The World Trade Center Towers.  We share the lyrics of the song “Two Step” in their memory.

“Two Step”
Dave Matthew

My love, I came to you with best intentions
You laid down and gave to me just what I’m seeking
Love, you drive me to distraction

My love do you believe that we
might last a thousand years
Or more if not for this,
Our flesh and blood,
It ties you and me right up
Tie me down

Celebrate we will
Because life is short but sweet for certain
We’re climbing two by two,
To be sure these days continue
Things we cannot change.

My love, you came to me like
wine comes to this mouth
Grown tired of water all the time
You quench my heart and, you quench my mind

Celebrate we will
because life is short but sweet for certain

In memory,
