Poem: The Peace of Wild Things Wendell Berry

On Thursday nights from March to December, Providence Rhode Island celebrates Gallery Night. Gallery Night is when local art galleries and museums are open free to the public.

One of the galleries featured recently was the alternative gallery space of AS220. www.as220.org , an artistic collaborative.

Steve Martin, a photographer, was one of the featured artists at the gallery. He began his artist statement with the poem: The Peace of Wild Things, by Wendell Berry. I am touched by the poem’s simple and gentle images of nature and the invitation to a quiet place to reflect and be.

The Peace of Wild Things.Wendell Berry

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Why no images on our blog?  Wedding images come and go with fashion and with the season, so many and so varied. We feel it is the words you share with each other, during your wedding ceremony, that are some of the most significant and intimate words you will ever share and, like gems, are unique and personal.
