from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

Rachel and Michael used this piece from Jane Eyre as their only reading during their wedding ceremony. They said: ” It is us”

I have for the first time found what I can truly love –I have found you. You are my sympathy –my better self –my good angel; I am bound to you with a strong attachment. I think you good, gifted, lovely: a fervent, a solemn passion is conceived in my heart; it leans to you, draws you to my center and spring of life, wraps my existence about you –and, kindling in pure, powerful flame, fuses you and me in one. It was because I felt and knew this, that I resolved to marry you.

Instructions for Life in the New Millennium

David and Kristen found this beautiful teaching essay by his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama for their wedding ceremony~~
~~Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
And that a loving atmosphere in your home
is the foundation for your life.
Be gentle with the earth,
be gentle with one another.
When disagreements come
remember always to protect the spirit of your union.
When you realize you’ve made a mistake,
take immediate steps to correct it.
Remember that the best relationship is one
in which your love for each other
exceeds your need for each other.
So love yourselves, love one another,
love all that is your life together
and all else will follow.

Only Once In Your Life by: B. Marley

This reading was split in two and read by two sister.

Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever.

Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colors seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. Life seems completely different, exciting .You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

― Bob Marley

An Essay about Love and Relationship by Bob Marley

An edited portion of the following essay by Bob Marley was read during one of our wedding ceremonies a few weeks ago. The couple took lines they felt right for themselves and their relationship and crafted a reading for their wedding ceremony which worked perfectly for them. Liking the overall tone and texture of what their reading, we were drawn  to find the original essay. What follows is what we found, which we suspect, is the original essay. We love the sensitive, depth, breath, comfort, care, and images describing a wonderful, warm, caring, healing, healthy, intimate relationship. We hope you enjoy this essay as much as we do.

Pooh and Piglet- Two Readings

Pooh and Piglet, two beautiful character with whom we can all identify. These two snapshots of Pooh  have been favorites of ours for years, they always make us smile, and maybe, just maybe, give one of us wet eyes.

Us Too – A. A. Milne

Wherever I am, there’s always Pooh,
There’s always Pooh and Me.
Whatever I do, he wants to do,
”Where are you going today?” says Pooh:
”Well, that’s very odd ‘cos I was too.
Let’s go together,” say Pooh, says he.
”Let’s go together,” says Pooh.

“What’s twice eleven?” I said to Pooh.
(“Twice what?” said Pooh to Me.)
”I think it ought to be twenty-two.”
”Just what I think myself,” said Pooh.
”It wasn’t an easy sum to do,
But that’s what it is,” said Pooh, said he.
”That’s what it is,” said Pooh.

“Let’s look for dragons,” I said to Pooh.
”Yes, let’s,” said Pooh to Me.
We crossed the river and found a few –
”Yes, those are dragons all right,” said Pooh.
”As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.
That’s what they,” said Pooh, said he.
”That’s what the yare,” said Pooh.

“Let’s frighten the dragons,” I said to Pooh.
”That’s right,” said Pooh to Me.
”I’m not afraid,” I said to Pooh,
And I held his paw and I shouted “Shoo!
Silly old dragons!” — and off they flew.
”I wasn’t afraid,” said Pooh, said he,
”I’m never afraid with you.”

So wherever I am, there’s always Pooh,
There’s always Pooh and Me.
”What would I do?” I said to Pooh,
”If it wasn’t for you,” and Pooh said: “True,
It isn’t much fun for One, but Two
Can stick together,” say Pooh, says he.
”That’s how it is,” says Pooh.

The House at Pooh Corner – A. A. Milne
“Pooh” whispered Piglet.
“Yes, Piglet” replied Pooh.
 “Nothing,” answered Piglet,
“I just wanted to be sure of you.”
“If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live without you.”
“It’s so much more friendly with two.”
“Pooh, promise me you won’t forget about me, ever. Not even when I am a hundred.”
Pooh thought for a little.
“How old shall I be then?”
 “Ninety-nine.”
Pooh nodded. “I promise,” he said. “Some people care too much, I think it’s called love.”

from Something Great by M.Clark

During a very tender and intimate family wedding ceremony, in a town park in Charlestown, RI, Ron and Kim shared their wedding vows. What follows is the reading they used during their ceremony. They modified the piece from a paragraph in the book Something Great by M.Clark. Kim took poetic license to make the words more personal for the two of them.  Kim and Ron used these words as a reading in their ceremony. We think the essay  could also easily be the foundation for marriage vows.

“You are the one who lifts me up and never lets my feet touch the ground.
The one who loves me so much and puts me above everything else.
The one who will love me on the sunny days, but will love me most through the heavy, thunderous storms.
Who shelters me, romances me, loves me until you have given me your all.
In return, I promise to love you hard and give back to you all you have given me.”

Relationships and Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s Gift From the Sea

This soft, and delicate reflection of Anne Morrow Lindbergh is a beautiful image of relationship. As you deepen, nourish and grow your own particular relationship ask yourselves: are we JOINING
or are we SEPARATING or ISOLATING? Life is all about relationships. All of life is about relationships. Life is all about coming together joining and growing our hearts, and our lives. Our joining together involves so much: sensitivity, communication, commitment, care, respect, listening, regard, esteem, awareness, desire, presence, love, safety, vulnerability, intimacy, trust, healing, truth. The events of separation and isolation touch into our dark side of secrets, fear, anger, lies, hurt, wounds, power, control,  Questions we feel valuable to keep before us while in our relationship are: Where am I? Where are we? How am I/we willing to grow to join with my partner? What needs nurturing, and watering? What needs to diminish and weeded out? Joining is an ever-growing dynamic. And while these questions are natural and appropriate for our primary relationship, they are also valid questions to ponder while considering my relationships with my family members, my friends, my work and my the various communities to which I belong. As our world experiences so much hurt and so many wounds, we feel these questions are extremely valid  to ponder for national and global relationships: How am I/we joining? How am I/we separating? How am I/we isolating? How am I/we called to grow together? How do we grow and heal together?

Here is Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s reading

“A good relationship has a pattern like a dance and is built on some of the same rules. Partners do not need to hold on tightly, because they move confidently in the same pattern, intricate but gay and swift and free, like a country dance of Mozart. To touch heavily would be to arrest the pattern and freeze the movement, to check the endlessly changing beauty of its unfolding. There is no place here for the possessive clutch, the clinging arm, the heavy hand; only the barest touch in passing. Now arm in arm, now face to face, now back to back – it does not matter which. Because they know they are partners moving to the same rhythm, creating a pattern together, and being invisibly nourished by it.”
