I (can’t) Promise You- Bahl

On a beautiful Friday evening in Bristol, Rhode Island, Aly and Brandon celebrated their wedding. This warm and sensitive couple modified a poem ascribed to Bhal with the first line being I can’t promise you. In their program, Aly and Brandon simply identified the piece as: I Promise You

I can’t promise you
that dark clouds
will never hover
over our lives
or that the future
will bring us many rainbows.
I can’t promise you
that tomorrow
will be perfect
or that life will be easy.
I can promise you
my everlasting devotion,
my loyalty,
my respect,
and my unconditional
love for a lifetime.
I can promise that
I’ll always
be there for you,
to listen
and to hold your hand,
and I’ll always do
my best to make you happy,
and make you feel loved.
I can promise that
I’ll see you through
any crisis,
and hope with you,
dream with you,
build with you,
and always cheer you on
and encourage you.
I can promise that
I’ll share my dreams my world,
and every aspect
of my life with you.
I’ll willingly be
your protector,
your advisor,
your counselor,
your friend,
your family,
your everything.
And I believe that’s
what love is truly all about.

We hope this poem has been helpful to you on your journey and you have enjoyed your visit.

But I Love Your Feet- Neruda

Pablo Neruda is like an old friend to us. He touches deep into our hearts and says so well what our hearts desire to proclaim to the world. This poem is one of those magical, mystical poems that, with simple images points to the deep place of love in the core of our being. Please, savor the feelings of love deep in your heart.

When I cannot look at your face
I look at your feet.
Your feet of arched bone,
your hard little feet.
I know that they support you,
and that your sweet weight
rises upon them.
Your waist and your breasts,
the doubled purple
of your nipples,
the sockets of your eyes
that have just flown away,
your wide fruit mouth,
your red tresses,
my little tower.
But I love your feet
only because they walked
upon the earth and upon
the wind and upon the waters,
until they found me.

We hope you have enjoyed your visit and this has been helpful in touching your heart.

An Essay about Love and Relationship by Bob Marley

An edited portion of the following essay by Bob Marley was read during one of our wedding ceremonies a few weeks ago. The couple took lines they felt right for themselves and their relationship and crafted a reading for their wedding ceremony which worked perfectly for them. Liking the overall tone and texture of what their reading, we were drawn  to find the original essay. What follows is what we found, which we suspect, is the original essay. We love the sensitive, depth, breath, comfort, care, and images describing a wonderful, warm, caring, healing, healthy, intimate relationship. We hope you enjoy this essay as much as we do.

“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

We hope you have enjoyed your visit and this has been helpful.

Love and Like

We received the following quote from a close friend who is a pillar of wisdom in our lives. She sends us quotes each day.  Since we are gardeners, this quote, sent today, is perfect. As an aside, we picked our first strawberry today, thank you earth and sun and rain and of course strawberry. We hope you enjoy the quote.

What is the difference between “I love you” and “I like you”?

This question is beautifully answered by Buddha: “When you like a flower you just pluck it. But when you love a flower, you water it daily”.  The one who understands this, understands life.

Another Valentine- Wendy Cope

We have been wandering around looking for love poems to celebrate Valentine’s Week. There are hundred, in not thousands of poems and couplets, written across the centuries and woven deeply into each culture, some flowery, others sugary, many sad. In Wendy Cope’s “Another Valentine” we find a wonderfully refreshing, mature, poem that is realistic, sure and speaks of a deep and mature love. While feeling the obligation to celebrate the date on the calendar that declares “we are to be loving and romantic”, the depth and spirit of their love shines abundantly clear.

“Today we are obliged to be romantic
And think of yet another valentine.
We know the rules and we are both pedantic:
Today’s the day we have to be romantic.
Our love is old and sure, not new and frantic.
You know I’m yours and I know you are mine.
And saying that has made me feel romantic,
My dearest love, my darling valentine.”

A Love Essay Attributed to Carl Sandburg

This “A Love Essay” is attributed to Carl Sandburg. We feel his essay is a wonderful reflection to share as we begin the Valentine’s Day weekend. The essay captures a level of maturity, depth, a willingness to grow, patiences to be with, and an excitement about, the possibilities love provides all the while opening our lives up further to be with each other.

“I love you for what you are, but I love you yet more for what you are going to be. I love you not so much for your realities as for your ideals. I pray for your desires that they may be great, rather than for your satisfactions, which may be so hazardously little. A satisfied flower is one whose petals are about to fall. The most beautiful rose is one hardly more than a bud wherein the pangs and ecstasies of desires are working for larger and finer growth. Not always shall you be what you are now. You are going forward toward something great. I am on the way with you and therefore I love you.”

These beautiful words from Sandburg’s essay also remind us of a huge sign hanging in a casino. We hear about the sign a longtime ago and how it captures the essence of what it takes to be in a quality relationship: “YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN”

May you and your love have a beautiful weekend for love’s celebration.

Vows: “When I’m Sixty-Four”

Yup, Paul McCartney’s wonderful song, “When I’m Sixty-Four” is a great song/ poem to celebrate Valentine’s Day and  a wonderful meditation to help you prepare to write marriage vows. Classic lines, wonderful images, beautiful sentiments, life, love and the fullness of relationships. “When I’m Sixty-Four” is on the ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album.

“When I’m Sixty-Four”

When I get older losing my hair
Many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I’d been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I’m sixty-four?

You’ll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I’m sixty-four?

Every summer we can rent a cottage in the Isle of Wight
If it’s not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck & Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away
Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me
When I’m sixty-four?

Ah, now, aren’t they wonderful thoughts for a Valentine’s Day Week?

My Love Has Made Me Selfish- John Keats

This is an extraordinary poem by John Keats to Fanny Brawne written about 1819-1820.

My love has made me selfish.
I cannot exist without you.
I am forgetful of everything but seeing you again.
My Life seems to stop there,
I see no further.
You have absorbed me.
I have a sensation at the present moment as though I were dissolving.
I should be exquisitely miserable without the hope of soon seeing you.
I have been astonished that men could die martyrs for religion,
I have shudder’d at it,
I shudder no more.
I could be martyred for my religion,
Love is my religion,
I could die for that.
I could die for you.
My creed is love and you are it only tenet.
You have ravished me away by a Power I cannot resist.

Love

Thanks for stopping by. The following came to us and we had to share it. Please enjoy and share.

Love defies all economic principles
The supply is vast and so is the demand.
The sources of love are infinite and yet it remains the most valuable thing we can possess.
Those who give more love,
get more.
Does this make sense? Of course not.
It’s Magic.
~Margaret B. Moss

The Black Dot

This is not a wedding ceremony item per se, but rather a life focusing essay that came to us yesterday. We think it is a fantastic reminder and a wonderful piece to have and reflect upon. I am sharing it with as many people as I can.

One day a professor entered the classroom and asked his students to prepare for a surprise test. They all waited anxiously at their desks for the exam to begin. The professor handed out the exam with the text facing down, as usual. Once he handed them all out, he asked the students to turn over the papers.
To everyone’s surprise, there were no questions, just a black dot in the center of the sheet of paper. The professor, seeing the expression on everyone’s faces, told them the following: “ I want you to write about what you see there” The students, confused, got started on the inexplicable task.
At the end of the class the professor took all the exams and started reading each one of them out loud in front of all the students. All of them, with no exception, defined the black dot, trying to explain its position in the center of the sheet. After all had been read, the classroom silent, the professor started to explain: “I am not going to grade you on this, I just wanted to give you something to think about. No one wrote about the white part of the paper. Everyone focused on the black dot, and the same happens in out lives. We have a white piece of paper to observe and enjoy, but we always focus on the dark spots. Our life is a gift given to us (by God) with love and care and we always have reasons to celebrate: nature renewing itself everyday, our friends around us, the job that provides our livelihood, the miracles we see every day… However, we insist on focusing on the dark spot: The health issues that bother us, the lack of money, the complicated relations with family members, the disappointment with a friend. The dark spots are very small when compared to everything we have in our lives, but they are the ones that pollute our minds. Take your eyes away from the black dots in your life. Enjoy each one of your blessings; each moment that life gives you. Be happy and live a life filled with love!

And remember from Sesame Street: it is all about the size of where you put your eye, and that’s about the size of it!

Enjoy,
