Liza and Roger’s Vows

On the Saturday of this past Memorial Day weekend, on a picture perfect day, on a wind-swept hill, on Block Island, in the State of Rhode Island,  Liza and Roger exchanged their vows which united their hearts and lives for life. These are the words, feelings and love they share with each other and proclaim to the world:

Roger’s Vows
~I love that you light up when your near water
I can only imagine its because you’re a sailor’s daughter

~I love that you have made our home in W.V.
but remember wherever you go I go we are now we

~I love that I can always count on you… except for being on time…

~I love that you think I am funnier than I am especially at night when you are giddy. I couldn’t find a rhyme with giddy

~I love that your fingers fit perfectly in mine.
And when your head hits my chest you fall asleep no matter what time

~I love that I knew your father, now I know now where you get your strength, and I love your dedication to family and how you will go to any length.

~I love that you have helped me be the person I am today,
And I know there are many others here that would say the same thing

~I love that you are courageous and untethered and not just with your cooking. And that somehow you knew that I loved burnt or well-done food

~I love that I get to profess, that I LOVE YOU, to everyone around
And all of the things I know about you and all the others I haven’t yet found

~I love that this entire weekend could only be planned by you
And we get to show the world that no one says I do, like we do

Liza’s Vows
~I promise to take care of you forever and ever amen
~I promise to always make you feel my love
~I promise to love you for a thousand years
~I promise I can’t smile without you
~I promise that no one will become between us like two islands in the stream

I stand here today with my heart full.
I have spent years taking care of myself and being the organizer, the decision makers, the person in charge.
You help me STOP and appreciate life and the importance of Love.
You see in me so much talent and possibility.
You see the real LIZA with all of my perfect imperfections. …for that I love you.

I love that you are my ROCK.
I love that you calm my craziness.
I love that when I tell you that we never slow dance, that you pull over on the side of the road and dance with me to music on the car radio.
I love that you LOVE family as much as I do.
I love that you know about the dip in the nose and the baby hair in the small of my back.
I love that you aren’t afraid to cry.
I love that these puppies are your babies too.
I love that you are a creative – always dreaming and discovering.
I love that you make me belly laugh.
I love that you GET me.
I love that we will grow old together.

So today – I make a promise to continue to laugh and discover with you.
I promise to appreciate you in health and take care of you in sickness.
I promise to always pluck the hair from your ears and watch MMA (even though it bores me to death)
I promise to always share my thoughts and make decisions together.
I promise a million more promises as we become partners.
Most importantly, I promise to love you madly, widely, fiercely “just a little” everyday of my life.

We hope sharing Roger and Liza’s vows has been helpful, has touched your heart, and you have enjoyed your visit.

from The Irrational Season by Madeleine L’Engle

This reading was used over the weekend at Samantha’s and Jordan’s wedding. The two of them choose this reading. They feel the ideas of togetherness and participation not possession are key elements in their relationship.

“But ultimately there comes a moment when a decision must be made. Ultimately two people who love each other must ask themselves how much they hope for as their love grows and deepens, and how much risk they are willing to take. It is indeed a fearful gamble. Because it is the nature of love to create, a marriage itself is something which has to be created, so that, together we become a new creature.

To marry is the biggest risk in human relations that a person can take.If we commit ourselves to one person for life this is not, as many people think, a rejection of freedom; rather it demands the courage to move into all the risks of freedom, and the risk of love which is permanent; into that love which is not possession, but participation. It takes a lifetime to learn another person. When love is not possession, but participation, then it is part of that co-creation which is our human calling, and which implies such risk that it is often rejected.”

We hope you have enjoyed your visit and this has been helpful.

Today’s Vows

Today was a beautiful day in Bristol, Rhode Island and the vows shared by the couple were filled with tenderness, love, hope, and promise.

His vows: I promise to be there when you need me, to fill your days with sunshine, to comfort you and encourage you, to help you reach your goals, to be your best friend ever and to love you all my life with all my heart.

Her vows: Today I give myself to you in marriage. I promise to encourage and inspire you, to laugh with you, and to comfort you in times of sorrow and struggle. I promise to support your dreams and to respect our differences. I am looking forward to creating a home filled with love and understanding.  You are my best friend and together we will build a family. I will love you all my life with all my heart.

We hope you have enjoyed these words and they have touched your heart.

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

As I look over the many wonderful readings and thoughts on our blog, I see somehow we have not included this classic. Each time I read this piece or hear it used during the celebration of a wedding, I deeply feel the intimacy of each line, and the connection  warmth, and passion, between two lovers. Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) has made the answer to this simple, yet so profoundly moving question a classic.  However, have you ever written out the answer to THE question yourself? Here is a suggestion for a warm and intimate date night with your partner: write out the answer to the question: “How Do I Love Thee?”  I am sure you will joyfully celebrate the answer seeing the beautiful depth and intimacy you share. Enjoy the celebration of your love.

How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of being and ideal grace.
I love thee to the level of every day’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for right.
I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith.
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints. I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life; and, if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death.

Vows and the “WE DO” Response

Who know why we have not been blogging…let’s blame February and March for being February and March, (in the Northern Hemisphere)but now wedding bells are in the air. We have some wonderful thoughts about weddings to share so please drop in every once in a while.

The following are  vows using the response WE DO said by the couple as a couple rather than I DO said as an individual. The following marriage vows were shared by James and Debbie last summer and are a wonderful example of a couple using the “WE DO” formula in proclaiming their vows.

James and Debbie, do you promise to be true to each other in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to be gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in love?
WE DO

Do you promise to seek sobriety, balance, and moderation in all things, being mindful of yourselves, of each other, and of your relationship?
WE DO

Do you promise to listen to each other’s voice and listen to each other’s heart, and understand with each other in all times, all situations, and all conditions?
WE DO

Do you promise to be a safe haven for each other, place of joy and peace and forgiveness, a place where hugs are to freely given?
WE DO

Do you promise to be each other’s partner in joy, comfort and sickness, solace and sorrow, strength in adversity, and constant companion in life?
WE DO

Do you promise to love and honor each other all the days of your lives?
WE DO

We hope you have enjoyed your visit.

You Touched My Hand

You touched my hand and reached my thoughts.
You kissed my lips and reached my heart.
You looked into my eyes and touched my soul.
No words were said, no thoughts exchanged.
Through only a touch you changed me,
With only a kiss you moved me;
With only a look you brought me life.

Vows: Jennifer and James

Last weekend we celebrated the wedding of high school sweethearts whose lives went away from each other and came back 35 years later via Facebook. These are the vows James and Jennifer shared  in their ceremony, before their family and friends.

James’ Vows to Jennifer:

Jennifer,
Because of you
I dare to dream again.
Because of you:
I laugh,
I smile,
I live again.
Because of you, I look forward with great joy and excitement exploring our new life together and spending the rest of my life with you growing as a husband and wife should.
Today, I stand here with you. in front of our family and friends, vowing to love you with all my heart and soul.
I vow to support and comfort you through all of life’s ups and downs.
I offer you all that I am and to be true and faithful as long as we both shall live.
I love you.

Jennifer’s vows to James:

James, I found you in the midst of a very rough time in my life.
You were the strength that helped me through it.
When I cried, you wiped my tears and held me close, always assuring me you would always be there for me, for this I am grateful.
It’s funny how life is, in the midst of pain,
Love still finds its way to overcome and conquer and join hearts, for this I am grateful.

I love you James with all my heart and soul,
You are my partner, my friend, my confidante,
For this I am grateful.
Today I stand in front of you, and our family and friends vowing my love and commitment to our unity of marriage.
I also promise my hand will always be holding yours.
Standing besides you through all of life’s joys and life’s challenges.
For as long as we both shall live.
I love you

Enjoy,
